Donald Trump has threatened to cut all US support to Israel if it follows through on a parliamentary vote in favour of a bill taking sovereignty over the West Bank.
The US President’s warning followed a furious reaction from senior US figures, including JD Vance, the Vice-President, who said on a visit to Israel that he took the vote as a “personal insult” and called it a “very stupid political stunt”.
Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, who is also in Israel to bolster Mr Trump’s fragile peace deal, said the bill that paves the way for annexation of the West Bank posed a threat to the ceasefire in Gaza.
Mr Vance said earlier that he was offended by the Knesset’s vote, as the Trump administration’s policy remains that the occupied West Bank will not be annexed by Israel.
“The vote was strange. If it was a political exercise, it was a stupid political exercise and I was offended by it,” Mr Vance said. “We will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank and we were not pleased with this vote.”
