The leader of an Israeli-backed Palestinian militia has been killed in southern Gaza in what could be a major setback for Israeli efforts to prop up its alternative to Hamas in Gaza.
Yasser Abu Shabab, whom Benjamin Netanyahu had said was being armed by Jerusalem, was killed during a dispute with another family, his Popular Forces militia declared.
The Popular Forces is one of several armed Palestinian groups supported by Israel and operating in Israeli-controlled zones. The groupsdescribe themselves as anti-Hamas nationalist forces and there are now fears that Abu Shabab’s death will strengthen Hamas’s hold on the enclave as Donald Trump’s peace plan appears to stall.
Amid conflicting reports of Abu Shabab’s murder, The Popular Forces said he suffered a gunshot wound while mediating a dispute among members of the Abu Suneima clan, which is based in the far south of Gaza.
