Hamas has reportedly written a personal letter to Donald Trump asking him to guarantee a 60-day ceasefire with Israel in return for the release of half of the remaining 48 hostages they are holding in Gaza..
The draft letter is currently with Qatari negotiators and will be sent to the US President this week, according to Fox News and the Saudi-owned Al-Hadath newspaper.
In the letter, the militant group guaranteed that it would keep to a ceasefire and agree to extend it as long as negotiations continued for a permanent end to the war
Hamas officials told Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat that they would release 10 living and two dead hostages in return for a truce, saying: “A new move is underway, in an attempt to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.”
Previous ceasefire negotations have stalled in part because of Hamas’s insistence a truce was conditional on Israel agreeing to a permanent ceasefire.
News of the letter emerged as Mr Trump prepares to present a plan to Arab leaders at the UN this week outlining his expectations for a truce between the two sides.
Leaders and officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan will discuss the plan with Mr Trump, Axios website reports.
