The Netanyahu government has repeatedly tried to interfere in Australian politics. It is past time the Albanese government — which is far more pro-Israeli than its critics maintain — responded.

The Netanyahu government clearly believes it has the right to dictate who enters Australia. In November 2024, former minister and right-wing Israeli politician Ayelet Shaked, who has called for the devastation of Gaza and its ethnic cleansing, was banned by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke from entering Australia. The Israeli government said the decision was “unacceptable”, “deeply offensive and troubling”.
In June, Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar was reported by Israeli media to have attempted to have the Australian government overturn a decision to refuse entry to extremist Israeli-American blogger Hillel Fuld. US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also wrote to Burke about Fuld, but noticeably predicated his request on how “I fully respect the decision to grant the visa is solely in your hands and you have a sovereign right to make the decision to deny entry to someone you consider a threat to national security …”
